Make A T-Shirt Rag Rug

Here’s how to make a t-shirt rag rug out of your old t-shirts. Or, click on the Road Kill T-shirts button on the left, buy a few t-shirts, and make a rag rug out of them.

1. Place extra-large T-shirt on cutting surface. Smooth bunching. Using rotary cutter, cut around sleeves close to seams to remove seams and sleeves. Save front and sleeves for strips.

2. Cut off a 1 1/2 -inch strip from left side of shirt, starting from bottom and going up to arm area. Repeat on right side.

3. Open T-shirt. Smooth out bunching. With rotary cutter, remove collar, starting at shoulder seam, creating two separate pieces.

4. Lay back of shirt on cutting surface. Trim uneven edges, creating an even rectangle (this will be your base). Set front aside for strips.

5. Cut large T-shirts and the sleeves off the base shirt into strips measuring approximately 1 1/2 inches wide and 7 inches long.

6. The strips should be attached to the base in vertical rows, starting from the upper left corner and working downward. Fold each strip in half and attach to base by stitching across center (of strip). Reinforce each finished row with one long vertical seam.

7. Start next row about 1 1/2 -inches below first row, keeping all strips free from stitching area. Continue making rows of strips until you reach the end of base. Remember to reinforce each row with a vertical seam.

8. If you used white T-shirts and would like to dye the rug, simply follow directions on any color of RIT dye. Dry rug on low heat. If necessary, trim strips for even shag look. The Detroit News
